2006 100 ha Regeneration masterplan
Stages: 2006 partly realised

The territory is an important component of the image of Ufa due to its natural landscapes. Historically, there is a residential area with low-rise housing. The key regions public objects, such as the Government of Republica Bashkortostan, the Congress Hall and its amphitheater, the monument to the national hero Salavet Yulaev, etc.

During last decade that were a serious different urban project that were aimed to develop strategic vision for the plot. On of them was developed in colladoration with developed by RAUM architects in collaboration with Arai Isozaki Architects (Tokyo) and assumed the creation of tha natural landscape park with middle-rise residentiatl complex (up to 35 000 sq.m.) and low density if public services. Other projects have assumed a more significant construction of residential buildings at the slope (up to 300 000 sq.m.). However, the projects share one approach - ignoring the interests of local stakeholders and demolishing the existing historical area.

In this regard in 2018, our team has initiated the process of developing the public technical task that will represent professional and public opinion about the territory and will include the interest of local residents, authorities, and business.

Strategy on a human scale
Location: Ufa
Programme: Vision for economic, social and spatial development
Stages: 2015 Public discussion, accepted by the Ufa City Administration

The project is elaborated into two dimensions. The urban analysis allowed to understand existing trends and to formulate the kit of urban policies for urban development. While participatory planning with stakeholders allowed verifying and validating the results of the analysis, on the other hand, the involvement of stakeholders gave the opportunity to drive projects that will implement the strategic projects into reality. The main challenge in formulating the Vision was to keep the balance between urban analysis on a big scale and information received from citizens at a local level.

The results of the project were presented to the Mayor of Ufa and became a base for Strategy Ufa-2030 and other municipal programmes. The project was highly appreciated by international experts (ISOCARP, PPS).

Stages: 2016 Urban development concept

The project assumes development of large-scale prefabricated residential neighborhood at periphery of excising district Dema. The key challenges of the project were integration of new construction to already built-up areas and creation of human scale typology of construction.

Work on the project consisted of 2 stages. The fist one included serious of strategic working session with stakeholders and citizens of district Dema. The Vision of Dema to 2030 was developed as a result. The key principals of spatial development were formulated based on this strategic Vision.

There are:
a) increasing amount of working places by creation of new centralities with wild variety of public functions,
b) improvement of connections between recreation zone and brown-field by introducing public spaces, and
c) development of middle height quarterly typology.

At the second stage of the project the "Hiteca MorphModel" software was designed to model profile of roads, height of building and size of quarters. For each quarters different scenarios of typology were modeled to find most effective and sustainable combination of parameters.

Programme: Concept
Stages: 2018 Start of realisation, 2017 Concept

In 2017 a large-scale federal program for public spaces was launched in Russia. To implement this program in Ufa, our team developed design projects for three public spaces in a peripheral residential area: - park - central street - embankment.

These projects were a continuation of our work, started in 2015, when we proposed a «strategy of unique neighbourhoods» of Ufa. The interconnected spaces form local center and provide access to the natural landscape.

In the basis of each project we put several key principles: - increase of availability and connectivity of spaces; - comfort and safety; - a variety of leisure and activities for different ages; - improvement of visual perception; - increasing of social life.

Forum UrbanBairam

Forum UrbanBairam is annual discussion platform used by some 2,500 citizens to express their views locally. The name "UrbanBairam" is a pun made from the title of traditional Tatar event "KurbanBairam", where "bairam" means celebration of goodness.

In 2015 Forum was accompanied by workshops for representatives from the economic and research sectors and civil society designed to feed professional expertise into The Vision of urban development of Ufa. Participation was encouraged throughout the process using a range of creative analogue and digital communications tools. In total, over 1000 opinions and suggestions were collected at the public and professional events organized around UrbanBairam and in the online dialogue. These contributions were evaluated, discussed and integrated into the «Strategy in a human scale» project with intensive input from Administration and local authorities.

The main goal of this book was to initiate the discussion about the future development of the city. The team of 11 international and 18 local experts were invited to share their ideas and hypotheses about the future development of Ufa. It should be noted that. However, in practice, the received materials have become manifestos about the need for change. That means the local professional community is ready to support further work on the development of the Strategy for Ufa.

"There is no need to say something more. We need to speak better. It's time for changes, it's time to take charge of the quality of life in our city. It's time to drop the inertia of the past and act on the basis of The Future Vision!"

Implosion. Schemaform
Location: Ufa
Programme: book
Stages:
2011 RIEA Book Competition finalist (Director Lebbeus Woods)
2013 published by The Ministry of Education and Science of Russia

The Implosion should be considered as a methodological reaction to the specific architectural and spatial tasks set by the urban design requirements. In this paper, we deal with sectors of a high dynamic development that have been experiencing the situation of so-called "inside explosion". Having been isolated and analyzed from the point of intercommunication, the unevenness of such urban spaces could become an independent subject for the formation of the concepts.

Lebbeus Woods comment to the book:

"The idea of investigating 'implosion' as a design method seems highly accurate in contemporary urban practices. The suggestion that 'implosion' offers a critical path for the disciplines of architecture, urban design, and urbanism to explore for revisit and revitalize the extraordinary creativity and experimentalism of the 1910s and '20s Russian Constructivism (which hence was repressed by Stalin in the '30s) seems like a fascinating thesis".

Dr.Crisis, or: How We Learn to Stop Faking and Kill the Microrayon
Location: Moscow
Programme: research
Stages:
2012 published as Final Studio Report

The Manifesto "Dr.Crisis, or: How We Learn to Stop Faking and Kill the Microrayon" was written as the Final Project at the studio "Citizens as customers" at Institute of Media, Design and Architecture Strelka (Moscow, Russia). During the final review, it was presented to a jury that included Rem Koolhaas (OMA), Renier de Graaf (AMO), Farshid Moussavi (Harvard University), Carlo Ratti (MIT), Dennis Frenchman (MIT).

The microrayon, or micro-region, is a classic feature of suburban Soviet cityscapes, and continues to appear in post-Soviet cities even though the technology and materials used, and indeed the very idea of creating identikit, mass-produced buildings, are all long out of date. Urban planners are still ignoring what should be a key consideration: the lifestyle expectations of residents. The research seeks to reinvent the notion of the microrayon, presenting ways to modernise it and, most importantly, create a new paradigm for low-cost housing.

David Erixon comment to the project:

"Olga specifically worked on the scenario planning and the overall case for change. Very interesting, thought-provoking and well-researched work. Olga was brave enough to choose a very complex task for her project and managed to produce a valuable proposal."
